Carole Lombard and Clark Gable were a cute all American, Hollywood couple!! They married in 1939.
But then on January 16, 1942, Carole Lombard was on a plane to head back home. She had been selling War Bonds to help her country. The plane she was on, along with her mother too, crashed on the side of a mountain. Everyone on the plane died instantly. Clark Gable was noted as inconsolable and decided to join the Army to serve his country too. His wife, Lombard asked him many times to join before. Even though Clark Gable was married, twice more in fact, he was buried next to Lombard.

DeleteHey Coley, did you ever read Lucille Ball's autobio - Love, Lucy.
ReplyDeleteThere is a sweet but sad passage where Lucille describes Clark's behavior after Carole's passing. They were good friends and neighbors at the time. Lucille's talks about Clark riding his motorcycle too fast and showing up at her door with Carole's movies under his arms and watching them over and over... It's haertbreaking!

I have seen that :( It's very sad. I forgot about Clark showing up at her door with her movies under his arm. That was a very heartbreaking story. I felt bad for him when I read that. Very sad about his riding too fast and also when he decided to join the army because that was what she wanted. He loved her so.
